I hope that your workplace experiences have all been positive. Although we strive for a harmonious work environment, unfortunately, that is not always the case. When this occurs, be mindful not to escalate situations with negative reactions, but rather, conduct yourself with restraint and decorum, which is unequivocally in your best interest.
Happy Autumn. The City of Cleveland is gorgeous in the Fall. Seasons represent the changing of the guard and the weather outside is cool and crisp, multicolored leaves of green, burgundy, scarlet, orange, yellow and golden-brown decorate the trees. It is time for change!
Civil Service workers perform the specialized, and necessary tasks, and services afforded to the public, and taxpayers pay for them; we are the first responders to all disasters. It was civil service workers who responded to the mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, and even though their response time was only 3 minutes, 23 people lost their lives.
On occasion, a Civil Service Employee Association Member, who is also in a union, will inquire with the Association’s Office on the value of holding joint membership. Three important benefits come to mind.

The protections that the civil service workers within the City of Cleveland enjoy are not great in number. However, where a right does it exist, it is quite definite in its meaning. Civil service is not a developing area of law, still in flux within the courts, and considered open to interpretation on the broader points. It is mostly very settled, and not what you would call a greatly changing body of law at all. One of the bedrock principles of a civil servant’s rights is the concept of “due process”.
The last update I provided in this column, the new City Attendance Policy was making its first waves. It has been almost a year now since the policy was enacted, and the same issue continues to plague good, honest workers. The policy remains unchanged, and the City shows no signs of seeing reason and altering the Sick Abuse Policy.

Ohio’s Cannabis Legalization: What it Means for City Employees and Workplace Policies
With the recent legalization of cannabis, employees may reasonably assume that—because recreational use is now legal—there will no longer be workplace consequences for its consumption. However, that assumption is not perfectly accurate.
